LandSonar, Inc. announces first-ever nationwide traffic-prediction product
LandSonar, Inc., a startup technology company based in San Francisco today announced the availability of LandSonar Predictive Traffic, the first-ever traffic-prediction product to cover the entire continental U.S. road network. The technology and data powering this service have been in continuous development for nearly four years.
LandSonar’s predictive traffic information covers the nation’s entire freeway network as well as virtually all arterial roads and major streets, providing accurate answers to many common traffic-related questions, including:
- What is the quickest route to the airport right now?
- How long will it take to drive home if I leave at 6:00 PM?
- How many trucks do we need to make all our deliveries on time?
- Which houses are for sale within a 45-minute commute of work?
- What is the optimal time to drive to the beach this Saturday?
Since early 2002, LandSonar has been meticulously and painstakingly compiling and analyzing historical and real-time traffic data from a vast number of sources, including hundreds of millions of hours worth
of third-party mobile GPS sensor data. LandSonar’s backend systems currently receive and process in the order of one million individual mobile GPS observations per hour every day.
LandSonar’s traffic information is designed to be embedded into the digital map data used by the full spectrum of consumer and enterprise navigation solutions, including popular Internet mapping websites such as Google Inc.’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) Google Maps, Yahoo! Inc.’s (Nasdaq: YHOO) Yahoo! Maps, Time Warner’s (NYSE: TWX) AOL MapQuest, and Microsoft Corp.’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) MSN MapPoint; hand-held personal navigation devices such as those from Garmin, Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN) and TomTom NV (Amsterdam: TOM2); and in-car navigation systems such as Denso (Tokyo:6902.T) and Pioneer Electronics (NYSE: PIO).
LandSonar’s traffic service has been extensively field-tested, typically with delivery fleets driving through multi-hour routes in large, dense metropolitan areas in various parts of the country. All field trials have been successful beyond expectation, reducing estimated-time-of-arrival errors by 70-90% as compared to the estimates generated by high-end routing software. We believe that no other system or service at present is even remotely comparable in geographic coverage or quality.
With LandSonar’s traffic information, businesses and individuals will be able to replace the static travel time assumptions prevalent in today’s navigation products with statistically accurate travel times and choose alternate travel routes based on predicted traffic conditions.
